Lalashan National Forest Recreation Area is located in the Upper Baling area along the Northern Cross-Island Highway in Fuxing District, Taoyuan. This site belongs to the Atayal Tribe's Upper Baling settlement; the name "Balung" means "cypress" or "giant fallen tree." "Lala" is a transliteration of the Atayal word "R’ra," which means "beautiful," "admirable," or "to overlook/watch over." One theory suggests it was a lookout for tribe members to spot prey or defend against enemies, while another says it reflects the awe and beauty felt upon arriving, highlighting the area’s rich cypress and ecological resources.
Cypress forests are found only in the cloud zones of North America, Japan, and Taiwan, making Lalashan’s forest extremely precious. Located in the fog forest zone, the vegetation is classified as primitive mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest, preserving a majestic grove of ancient cypress trees formed over thousands of years. It is also an important habitat for wildlife such as the Taiwan Blue Magpie, Vivid Niltava, and Taiwan Serow, representing a classic forest ecosystem of Northern Taiwan's mid-altitude mountains with rich natural and cultural features.
