Taipingshan was historically known as "Mianao," a Tayal word meaning "lush and green." Visitors can stroll through the primeval forest behind Zhen'an Temple, letting their thoughts soar back to the era when giant trees covered the mountains. Driving along the Cuifeng Forest Road, where you may encounter Formosan Macaques and Mikado Pheasants, you reach the end: Cuifeng Lake. At 1,840 meters above sea level, it is Taiwan's largest alpine lake and home to the national treasure, the Taiwan Beech. In autumn, you can admire the golden hills along the 4km trail. Not far from the toll station lies Jiouze Hot Springs, a renowned carbon acid spring and a highlight of the area. Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area is undoubtedly the top choice for nature lovers visiting Yilan.
